Replacing existing winches and adding two winches
Sea Dragon came equipped with a nice collection of Lewmar winches. The mainsheet had a nice 30, the jib sheets worked their way around two nice Lewmar 42's. Also on board are several 8's, 16's and 30's. While nice none of the winches on Sea Dragon were self-tailing. While my family sails with me, it is more like single handed sailing than sailing with a full crew.
I decided to add two winches to my list of winches and upgrade some of the more important winches with Lewmar Ocean Self-tailing winches.
|Sea Dragon came equipped with two Lewmar 42's. When I went to remove them I was surprised to discover they had NO backing plates.|
|The Lewmar 42's were replaced with nice shiny new Lewmar 48 Self-tailing Ocean Winches. I added 1/8 inch stainless steel backing plates.|
|The Mainsheet ran over a nice Lewmar 30 that was replaced with a new Lewmar Self-tailing 30 Ocean winch. In hind site, I should have replaced it with a Lewmar 40.|
|Sea Dragon did not have winches aft. I added
two new Lewmar 16 Self-tailing Ocean winches. The starboard winch is used
furling the head sail and setting the preventer on the starboard side.
While the port winch will be used for furling the staysail and setting the preventer on the port side.
